At the house of Armando, the Spanish lord is telling his pageboy, Mote, of his love for a beggar woman. The boy, who is extremely intelligent, tells him what her complexion says about her, but Armando cannot be dissuaded. Behind his back, the boy makes jabs at his lovesick master, but to his face appears to obey him completely. The constable enters with Costard and the woman he was found with, Jaquenetta, is there as well. Constard is released into Armando's custody for punishment, and Armando professes his love for the girl even though she is a peasant. She doesn't believe him, but he promises to visit her despite the fact she is a dairymaid.
