Jeannette Walls is an American journalist and author and is perhaps most famous for her best-selling autobiography, The Glass Castle (2005), which has gone on to sell in the millions. Her work as a gossip columnist informed her first book, and is entitled Dish: The Inside Story on the World of Gossip (2000).
She was born in 1960 in Phoenix, Arizona and after leaving her poverty-stricken home in Welch, West Virginia as a teenager she moved to New York. She went on to study at Barnard College and, as outlined in her autobiography, she received little help from her nonconforming parents either as a child or young adult.
Following the success of The Glass Castle, Half Broke Horses (2009) stays with Walls’s family and recounts the life of her maternal grandmother, Lily Smith, in the form of ‘a true life novel’.
