Briarthorn
This is a minor character, but is significant in that he kidnapped Wah-ta! -Wah.
Chingachgook
He is a friend of Deerslayer and is also referred to as the Delaware. The Anglicized version of his name is Great Serpent.
Deerslayer
As the eponymous hero, he is central to many of the main events. The readers are often told of how he is a white man raised in the ways of the Delaware Native Americans and the Moravian missionaries and as such is driven by his Christianity and understanding of this older tradition. He earns the name Hawkeye during this novel, and his birth name is Natty Bumppo. He is the main protagonist of the Leatherstocking Tales and The Deerslayer is the first of these in terms of chronology, but was the last to be written.
Harry March
He is often referred to by his nickname, Hurry, and is a large and good-looking man who is also blunt and crude in his speech. He is also seen to be driven by the thought of money, as when he and Tom Hutter attempt to scalp a group of women and children, and is attracted to Judith Hutter.
Hetty Hutter
Hetty is Judith’s younger sister and is often described as ‘feeble minded’ and honest. She is also drawn to the Bible and the truths that she believes it holds.
Judith Hutter
Judith is the elder sister of Hetty and is often referred to as being comely and uncommonly beautiful.
Tom Hutter
The readers are given to believe he is the father of Judith and Hetty, but shortly before he dies he reveals this is not true. It is also revealed later that his name is Thomas Hovey.
Rivenoak
As one of the chiefs of the enemy camp (of the ‘Mingos’), Rivenoak plays a minor and yet significant role in the fate of Deerslayer up to the point when the garrison officers appear to save him.
Wah-ta! -Wah
She is the betrothed of Chingachgook and is also referred to as Hist in the novel. She is the reason that Chingachgook and Deerslayer have arranged to meet, and why Deerslayer is in the area at the beginning of the novel, as she has been kidnapped and they aim to free her.
