SUMMARY AND ANALYSIS
Note on the Text: All page numbers refer to Ray Bradbury, The Martian Chronicles (1950; New York: Bantam Books, 1982).
Note on Structure: The Martian Chronicles is not an organic, formally unified novel in the conventional sense but rather a loosely thematically connected collection of short stories (several previously published). Bradbury provides a chronological organization, arranging both the stories and the short, “interstitial” connecting material between them in a timeframe that spans approximately a quarter-century of (what was at the time of the first edition) the human future (January 1999-October 2026). For purposes of this study guide, ordinarily one “interstitial” piece and one short story will be considered together, constituting a “chapter.”
