Act 1, scene 3: Faustus is busy conjuring devils and showing off his newfound knowledge. He succeeds in conjuring up the devil Mephostophilis. Faustus wants Mephostophilis to be his servant, but the devil replies that he is already Lucifer's servant and cannot enter the service of another without his permission. Faustus tells Mephostophilis that he is willing to surrender his soul to Lucifer if will be granted twenty-four years of life in luxury and power on earth. He boasts that he has no fear of damnation or God, and would gladly give his all in the worship of the devil.
Act 1, scene 4: Faustus's servant Wagner engages in conversation with an impudent clown and they exchange a comical repartee. The clown refuses to be Wagner's servant until Wagner conjures up two devils to frighten him. The clown is amazed at this display of magic, and agrees to serve Wagner as long as he can learn how to practice the dark arts as well.
