Part 6, Chapter 4: Svidrigailov then begins to talk about his past, revealing that he had been in debtors' prison and how Martha Petrovna had bailed him out. He discusses the details of his open arrangement with her as well as his eventual infatuation for Dunia. He says that Dunia began to pity him as a fallen man, which was part of his seduction. As he talks, Raskolnikov realizes that he is still obsessed with Dunia. Svidrigailov tells him about how he is engaged to a sixteen-year old-girl, the account of which leaves Raskolnikov disgusted. They leave the tavern.
