Primrose Everdeen is Katniss’s younger sister. Katniss’s nickname for Prim is “little duck,” and protecting her is Katniss’s driving motivation.

Mrs. Everdeen is Katniss’s and Prim’s mother. Her first name is not given in the novel. Her knowledge of herbs makes her the closest thing the Seam has to a healer.

The Gamemakersare the Capitol citizens who script each year’s Hunger Games, create the arena, assess the tributes, and arrange events to keep the games lively. They receive a great deal of respect in the Capitol—unless their Games fail to please the audience or President Snow.

Gale Hawthorne
Gale Hawthorne is Katniss’s closest friend, her confidante and hunting partner, and possibly the man she loves. He certainly loves her. Gale, whose nicknames for Katniss is Catnip, works in the coal mines and helps his mother support his younger siblings.

Hazelle Hawthorne
Hazelle Hawthorneis Gale’s mother. Widowed by the mining accident that killed Katniss’s father, Hazelle works tirelessly and endlessly to provide for her children. Katniss admires her. Gale’s younger siblings are Rory (age twelve), Vick (age ten), and Posy (age four). Gale works hard to support them so that they will never have to buy tesserae and be entered in the lottery more than once.

PeetaMellarkis District 12’s male tribute in the Hunger Games. A baker’s son, generous and clever, he loves Katniss.

Portia is Peeta’s stylist when he is in the Capitol. Readers learn less about her than about Cinna, but they are partners in their plan to ensure that no one in the audience forgets Katniss and Peeta.

Roobais District 12’s butcher, a wry woman who is sympathetic to Katniss and Gale because they bring her good game.

Rue is a twelve-year-old girl from District 11. With dark skin and eyes, intelligent and kind, Rue excels at moving through the tree-tops but not at killing. She becomes Katniss’s ally in the arena.

President Snow leads the government in the Capitol and rules Panem. Slightish, gray, and impeccably dressed, he is never without a white rose and, Katniss thinks, the aroma of blood.

Claudius Templesmithis the “legendary announcer” of the Hunger Games. His is the voice tributes hear in the arena, making announcements when necessary.

Thresh is the male tribute from District 11—strong and large, he is loyal to Rue.

Effie Trinket is District 12’s reluctant escort and liaison to the Capitol. Obsessed with social standing, fashion, and proper behavior, she nevertheless becomes attached to her charges.

Madge Undersee is the mayor’s daughter, Katniss’s age and a friend, though Katniss isn’t aware of it yet. She gives Katniss an expensive gold mockingjay pin as her district token.

Venia, Octavia, and Flaviusare Katniss’s prep team. Capitol citizens, they speak in high-pitched voices, have brightly dyed hair and garish make-up, and come to adore Katniss.
