The Duke, disguised as a Friar, enters the prison and wishes to speak with some of the prisoners. Provost sends him Juliet, and the Duke asks her to repent. She expresses her regret for her sins, but admits to him that she loves Claudio. The Duke listens and tells her that Claudio is to die the next day. Juliet is shocked and saddened by the news.
