Summary: Sophie tells Langdon that she believes he is innocent. She also tells Langdon that Saunière’s message was meant for her: the “P.S.” stands, not for postscript, but for “Princess Sophie,” the pet name by which Saunière, her grandfather, called her.
Analysis: This chapter continues to unravel the many layers of meaning in the symbols throughout Brown’s novel. We learn that, although the numbers Saunière scrawled are in fact a Fibonacci sequence, the numbers are in context “meaningless,” written solely “to make sure the investigation included cryptographers” (p. 76). Similarly, Saunière’s use of the Vitruvian Man was meant to attract Sophie’s attention, since it is her favorite of Da Vinci’s works.
