Summary: At the Opus Dei residence, Silas is abruptly awakened as the police storm the building to arrest him. Fleeing in the confusion, Silas accidentally shoots Bishop Aringarosa.
Analysis: Silas’ ironic shooting of the man whom he credits with saving his life functions as a perfect example of the essentially destructive nature of the Teacher’s schemes. As Rémy reflected earlier, both men have allowed themselves to be used by the Teacher. Now, they are paying the price. Silas’ anger leads him to indiscriminate violence that causes him to harm the man he regards as his protector.
