Summary
The King's soldiers and cavalry, commanded by Phoebus, arrive at Notre Dame and bloody, intense fighting erupts. The Truand women and children throw themselves at the horses; the soldiers skewer Truands indiscriminately. Clopin wields a long scythe and kills many soldiers and horses before he is cut down as well. Eventually the Truands break and flee in all directions. Quasimodo rejoices and runs to Esmeralda's cell but finds it empty.
